Body Fat % and Your BMI

Body Fat Percentage and Your BMI is an estimate of the fraction of the total body mass that is adipose tissue (or referred to as Fat Mass), as opposed to lean body mass (muscle, bone, organ tissue, blood, and everything else) or referred to as Fat Free Mass.

This index is often used as a means to monitor progress during a diet or as a measure of physical fitness for certain sports, such as body building. It is more accurate as a measure of excess body weight than body mass index (BMI) since it differentiates between the weight of muscle mass and that of the fat mass while BMI lump all masses into one figure. However, its popularity is less than BMI because equipment required to perform the body fat percentage is not readily available and skills are required to perform the measurement. Even when measured by a skillful person, there are factors that contribute to a significant margin of error.

Can “Normal Weight Obesity:” Be A Risk Factor For Heart And Metabolic Problems

“Using the term ‘normal weight obesity’ is really a way of being more precise about the changing conceptualization of obesity, because the real definition of obesity is excess body fat,” says Francisco Lopez-Jimenez, M.D., a cardiologist on the Mayo research team. “Our study demonstrates that even people with normal weight may have excessive body fat, and that these people are at risk for metabolic abnormalities that lead to diabetes and, eventually, to heart disease.”

Quote of The Day

I hope that my achievements in life shall be these — that I will have fought for what was right and fair, that I will have risked for that which mattered, and that I will have given help to those who were in need that I will have left the earth a better place for what I’ve done and who I’ve been. Reducing Your Stress Levels With Exercise

Though causes of stress can be plentiful, there are multiple ways to combat stressors and the negative toll they can take on the body, says an expert at the American College of Sports Medicine’s (ACSM) 12th-annual Health & Fitness Summit & Exposition.

Christina Geithner, Ph.D., and an ACSM-certified health/fitness instructor, says people experience stress in different ways, depending on the severity and duration of the stressor. Stress can have a positive impact in that it can motivate as well as help maintain focus and alertness. On the down side, stress may result in feelings of being overwhelmed or out of balance, and can cause anxiety and depression.

Success means doing the best we can with what we have. Success is the doing, not the getting — in the trying, not the triumph, Success is a personal standard — reaching for the highest that is in us — becoming all that we can be. If we do our best, we are a success. Success is the maximum utilization of the ability that you have. Zig Ziglar

Money Can Buy Happiness…When Spent On Others!

Researchers at the University of British Columbia and the Harvard Business School have found that it’s possible to buy happiness after all: when you spend money on others.

In a series of studies, UBC Asst. Prof. Elizabeth Dunn found that individuals report significantly greater happiness if they spend money “pro-socially” - that is on gifts for others or charitable donations - rather than spending on themselves. Her findings will appear in the March 21 edition of the journal Science.

The Psychology Of Physical Fitness in Tennis

by Ivar Rudi

Physical fitness is one of the great essentials of match play. Keenness can only be acquired if the physical, mental, and nervous systems are in tune. Consistent and systematic training is essential to a tournament player.

Regular hours of sleep, and regular, hearty food at regular hours are necessary to keep the body at its highest efficiency. Food is particularly important. Eat well, but do not over-eat, particularly immediately before playing. I believe in a large hearty breakfast on the day of a big match. This should be taken by nine-thirty. A moderate lunch at about one o’clock if playing at three. Do not eat very rich food at luncheon as it tends to slow you up on the court. Do not run the risk of indigestion, which is the worst enemy to dear eyesight. Rich, heavy food immediately before retiring is bad, as it is apt to make you “loggy” on the court the next day.
