New data presented at EULAR 2008, the Annual Congress of the European League Against Rheumatism in Paris, France, show that intake of oily fish is associated with a reduced risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis (RA), whereas psychosocial work stress and smoking can increase the risk of developing the condition. The findings, all taken from a large population-based case-control study in Sweden called EIRA (Epidemiological Investigation of Rheumatoid Arthritis), shed light on the important role of environmental and social factors in the development of RA.

According to the National Institutes of Health, nearly 10 million Americans suffer from fibromyalgia. Sadly, many go through months and years of pain, frustration and confusion before receiving treatment because there is no diagnostic for this chronic illness.
Medical tests such as x-rays, blood tests and muscle biopsies can rule out other medical conditions (lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, Lyme disease) but can’t confirm fibromyalgia. Meanwhile, fibromyalgia sufferers endure multiple symptoms including global aching pain, fatigue, irritable bowel syndrome, sleep disturbances, heightened sensitivity to any sensation and depression.

Q: Recently I have been hearing a lot in the media about inflammation. Is there something I can do or take to help reduce inflammation in my body?
A: That’s a great question and it is good that you are hearing more about it! Inflammation is often called the “silent killer”. But remember that there are different types of inflammation. Acute inflammation is necessary for life. For example, when you cut your finger, an inflammatory process is necessary to heal that wound. That is acute inflammation and is good. Chronic inflammation, however, is dangerous and is the underlying issue for many diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity, Alzheimer’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and more. You can see why it is important to reduce chronic inflammation; particularly since many of these diseases typically begin to present as we age!

A recent study published in Arthritis Care and Research journal concluded that regular exercise, specifically the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program, is an effective course in significantly improving and managing arthritis pain. This is good news for the aging population of U.S. baby boomers who want to get back to basics with a natural remedy for pain. In fact, arthritis is projected to increase by 40 percent, affecting 67 million Americans, in the next two decades.

Low doses of steroids can inhibit joint damage when used in the early phase of rheumatoid arthritis, according to a new review of evidence.
High-quality evidence supports combining the pills with standard medications in the first two years after diagnosis. “Such treatment should be made readily available to patients,” say review authors led by John Kirwan of Liverpool Women’s Hospital in England.

A gluten-free vegan diet may improve the health of patients with rheumatoid arthritis, according to new research from Karolinska Institutet. The diet has a beneficial effect on several risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
Rheumatoid arthritis is associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and cardiovascular diseases. The underlying causes are unknown, but researchers suspect that the disturbed balance of blood fats seen in patients with rheumatoid arthritis may be part of the explanation.
